Don’t Let These Electrical Problems Leave You In The Dark This Summer

During the hot California summer, all we can do is try to keep cool the best we can! Some may choose to head out for a beach day while others inhale popsicles by the pool, and still others may prefer to simply stick their heads in the refrigerator.

However, at the end of the day, there’s no better feeling than returning to a cool, comfortable home. It’s no secret that your AC gets a workout during the summer months, but what happens when your other appliances begin shutting down as they attempt to compete with your air conditioner for power?

Check Out These 5 Common Summertime Electrical Issues & What You Can Do About Them

Flickering Lights

If your lights flicker and dim every time your AC system runs, it’s a sign of wiring problems. Make sure to schedule an appointment with an electrician to have the problem evaluated. Whether it’s faulty wiring or power surges, your electrician will know how to fix your electrical system as quickly as possible.

Ceiling Fans Spinning Backwards

While ceiling fans can enhance your comfort without impacting your power bill, they won’t do any good if they’re spinning the wrong way! Make sure your ceiling fans are turning counterclockwise during the summer. This ensures they’re pushing cool air down to you, instead of pulling it up to the ceiling.

Extension Cords

If you don’t have outdoor outlets, you may be using extension cords heavily to power your patio lights, stereo system and electric lawncare tools, but these are only a momentary solution and are not ideal for outdoor living enthusiasts. Rather than risk painful shocks or electrical fires from frayed and damaged extension cords, invest in having outdoor outlets installed so you can enjoy your backyard danger-free.

Brown-Outs

Because everyone will be using their air conditioners so frequently, much more energy is being exerted to keep people comfortable. Eventually, the power grid may falter due to the high energy demand. There are a lot of ways to save energy without sacrificing comfort, so make sure you’re doing what you can to stay cool without risking a brown-out.

Tripped Breakers

If your circuits are already overwhelmed by powering other appliances, they may not be able to handle your AC unit as well. If you’re experiencing tripped breakers whenever the AC kicks into high gear, don’t just reset the breaker and move on. Call an electrician for an in-depth electrical service inspection. Your AC may need a dedicated circuit or you could need a panel upgrade, especially if you own an older home.
