Generac Generator

Quality Is Key When It Comes To A New Generator

In today’s world, where power outages can happen at any time due to extreme weather events, technical failures, or other unforeseen circumstances, having a backup generator isn’t just a luxury—it’s a necessity for many. However, the process of installing a generator is complex and requires professional expertise. Our electrical experts will explore the critical importance of professional generator installation and the potential consequences of opting for a non-professional, low-cost service.

Case Study – Lowest Bid Loses

When it comes to installing a backup generator, the expertise and reliability of an electrician cannot be overstated. A poorly installed generator can lead to a multitude of problems, from minor inconveniences to severe safety hazards. We’ve witnessed firsthand the repercussions of choosing cost over quality, and one such real-life occurrence stands out.

Lowest Bid Ends Up Costing Way More

Is going with the lowest bid the best option?  Not always….

We recently got a call from a client that we had given an estimate for a home generator installation about a year and a half ago.  He had gotten other estimates and went with the lowest, about $4000 lower than ours.

He called us because his automatic transfer switch had caught on fire and he couldn’t get in touch with the installer.

But it gets worse, the fire also damaged his main electrical panel.  So, we gave him an estimate to replace the transfer switch and repair the main panel along with any wires that were burnt in the process.

But wait… There’s more!  While pulling the permits to make the repairs, we discovered that the original installer pulled the permits but didn’t call for a final inspection.  And other aspects of the installation were not to code either.  Of course, now the original permit is expired and a new one will have to be pulled, the installation brought up to code and have it inspected.

When all is said and done, the client will have paid $6,000 more than our original estimate.  So, was going with the lowest estimate the best option?  Not for this client.

What’s Involved In Installing A Generator?

The process of installing a generator involves several critical steps, each requiring specific expertise:

  • Site Survey – Assess the best location for the generator based on safety codes and operational efficiency.
  • Placement of Gas or Propane Tank or Lines – Ensure the fuel source is correctly and safely installed.
  • Permitting – Navigate the necessary legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Utility Planning – Coordinate with utility providers for integration.
  • Equipment Delivery and Digging – Manage the logistics of getting the generator to your site and preparing for installation.
  • Installation and Inspections – Ensure the installation meets all safety and our operational standards.
  • Startup and Outage Testing – Make sure the generator operates correctly in both normal and outage scenarios.
  • Permit Process – Finalize all permits to ensure the installation is recognized as compliant with local regulations.
  • H.O.A.’s – Navigate HOA Regulations and work directly with them.

Each of these steps is critical to ensure that your generator is installed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with all local codes and regulations.

How To Hire The Right Generator Installation Company

When it comes to selecting a generator installation company, it’s crucial to choose one that not only promises reliability and efficiency but also ensures safety and compliance with all regulatory standards. Here are some key qualities to look for that will help you identify a reputable and trustworthy generator installation company:

1. Certified Professionals

Ensure that the company employs electricians and technicians who are certified to install generators. This guarantees that the team has the necessary knowledge and expertise to perform the installation safely and according to code.

We’re proud to be an Official Select Certified Generac Dealer for all your generator needs in the Coachella Valley.

2. Experience and Expertise

Look for a company with a solid track record of successful generator installations. Experience in the field means the company is likely to be familiar with a wide range of scenarios and challenges, ensuring they can handle your specific needs competently. Hydes has been in business for over 50 years and will be able to help with your generator needs as we are a certified Generac Generator Dealer.

3. Comprehensive Assessment and Customized Solutions

A reputable company will offer a thorough site assessment to understand your needs fully. They should provide a tailored solution that considers your property’s layout, your energy needs, and any specific requirements you may have, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

4. Clear Communication

From the initial assessment through to the installation and after-service, clear and open communication is vital. A good company will keep you informed at every stage of the process, explain the work to be done, and be transparent about costs and timelines.

5. High-Quality Equipment

The quality of the generator and related components is critical for reliability and longevity. Look for companies that use high-quality, reputable brands and can provide detailed information about the equipment’s performance and maintenance requirements.

6. Safety Standards

Safety should be a top priority. The right company will adhere strictly to safety codes and regulations, ensuring that your installation is not only efficient but also safe for your property and everyone on it. This includes proper handling of fuel sources, electrical connections, and ensuring adequate ventilation.

7. Warranty and Service Agreements

A reliable generator installation company will offer warranties on their work and the equipment they install. Look for service agreements that include regular maintenance to keep your generator in optimal condition and ensure it’s ready to perform when you need it most.

8. Positive Customer Reviews and References

Customer reviews and references can provide insight into the company’s reliability and quality of service. A reputable company will have a history of satisfied customers and will be willing to provide references upon request.

9. Emergency Services

The availability of emergency services is essential. Your installation company should offer prompt service calls if you encounter any issues with your generator, ensuring minimal downtime and peace of mind.

10. Compliance and Permits

A professional company will handle all necessary permits and ensure that your generator installation complies with local codes and regulations. This avoids any legal or safety issues that might arise from non-compliance.
